Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effect of distant muscle contraction on the H reflex.
Method: During isometric contraction of dominant hand using hand held dynamometer, H reflex was examined on the contralateral upper and lower extremities in 15 healthy adult subjects. The minimal latency, the largest peak-to-peak amplitude, H/M ratio, stimulation intensity at initial and maximal H reflex amplitude were measured.
Results: During contraction of dominant hand, the minimal latency of H reflex in the soleus, and stimulation intensity at initial and maximal H reflex amplitude in the FCR and soleus were significantly decreased (p<0.05). The largest peak-to-peak amplitude in the FCR and soleus and H/M ratio in the soleus were significantly increased. (p<0.05).
Conclusion: H reflex was facilitated according to the level of distant muscle contraction. Therefore the distant muscle contraction or tension of subjects should be considered during routine H reflex studies.
